Taviri has spent most of his working life in banking and mortgage advisory roles, having moved to Christchurch in 1998 from Papua New Guinea where he had started with the multinational Westpac bank. He decided to settle with his Kiwi wife Tahlia in the Garden City, where he has spent further time with both Westpac and also with SBS Bank. That work included being a bank manager at Westpac’s Eastgate branch and also working as a mobile mortgage manager where he took on use of his skills in sales. He also gained experience working with and advising small to medium-sized businesses. During his time with the banks he enjoyed being part of the corporate sector but has since found that he can have a much wider role with individual Lifetime clients. His strong sales emphasis means he is just as happy dealing with a customer in Blenheim as in Christchurch and says that means he is open to work from Kaitaia to the Bluff. He helps clients get the best options from both mainstream banks and second tier lenders.
Taviri likes to take time with home buyers to ensure they first of all choose the right mortgage option, then subsequently make the right choices about paying the loan off. His experience with banking helps him understand that there are more mortgage options than many people realise. He often suggests that home owners stick with the same mortgage provider rather than switch between banks every five years or so. Even those people who have become disillusioned with their existing bank or may have spotted a better lending rate at another institution often maybe need to relook at their loans with the help of an adviser. There is a significant cost to moving from bank to bank. Taviri says there is no greater pleasure than receiving positive feedback from a customer happy that they have moved into a new home with his help. He also works with those that have faced financial challenges and might need to get their debt levels under control. He enjoys staying in touch with his clients and helping them through that long term repayment process that goes with every major property transaction. Taviri understands the principles behind budgeting and a good relationship with the bank. Talking to one customer, paying off $300 a month on their mortgage under their existing plan, saw Taviri suggest an increase to $400 a month. That helped his client’s payments eat into not only the interest being repaid but also the principal loan amount.
Outside of work Taviri and his wife Tahlia enjoy spending time with their four children and friends. He enjoys getting involved in the children’s sporting endeavours including coaching his son’s under-6 rugby team.
